Germinal est un roman d'Émile Zola publié en 1885. Il s'agit du treizième roman de la série des Rougon-Macquart. Écrit d'avril 1884 à janvier 1885, le roman paraît d'abord en feuilleton entre novembre 1884 et février 1885 dans le Gil Blas. Il connaît sa première édition en mars 1885. Depuis, il a été publié dans plus d'une centaine de pays.L'édition de référence. Lecture recommandée en 4 ème par le Ministère de l'Education National. Avril 1884: les mineurs de la Compagnie d'Anzin, dans le Nord, reprennent le travail après huit semaines de grève: ils n'ont plus rien à manger et n'ont rien obtenu de leurs revendications. Quelques semaines plus tôt, un écrivain est venu leur rendre visite: Émile Zola. L'homme a pris des notes, visité les corons, il est même descendu dans la mine. Sous sa plume, Anzin va devenir le Voreux, cette mine où Étienne Lantier trouve un emploi. Le travail est rude, mal payé, la protestation gronde. Lantier prend la tête de la grève...Fils de Gervaise Macquart et de son amant Auguste Lantier, le jeune Étienne Lantier s'est fait renvoyer de son travail pour avoir donné une gifle à son employeur. Chômeur, il part dans le Nord de la France à la recherche d'un nouvel emploi. Il se fait embaucher aux mines de Montsou et connaît des conditions de travail effroyables (pour écrire ce roman, Émile Zola s'est beaucoup documenté sur le travail dans les mines et s'est également rendu sur place afin de comprendre les conditions de travail des mineurs).Il trouve à se loger dans une famille de mineurs, les Maheu, et tombe amoureux de l'une des filles, la jeune Catherine. Celle-ci est la maîtresse d'un ouvrier brutal, Chaval, et bien qu'elle ne soit pas insensible à Étienne, elle se refuse à passer d'amant en amant.Lorsque la Compagnie des Mines, arguant de la crise économique, décrète une baisse de salaire, Lantier pousse les mineurs à la grève. Il parvient à vaincre leur résignation et à leur faire partager son rêve d'une société plus juste et plus égalita
