About the Book

English summary: In Renaissance und Barock. Eine Untersuchung uber Wesen und Entstehung des Barockstils in Italien, published in 1888, Heinrich Wolfflin takes up the reinterpretation of baroque style. During this neo-baroque trend, a group of art historians strove to re-analyze and reassess this 16th and 17th century style of architecture and also to identify a style of baroque originating in antique times. This quest to find a general principle in the full course of history, an insight into the very 'core' of art, was, according to Wolfflin, the very goal of art history. Among the many attempts to define a baroque style, Wolfflin's study ranks highly owing to the quality of his methodology. He combines a descriptive analysis and comparison of the styles of renaissance and baroque with an attempt to explain the reasons behind the stylistical changes and then verifies his findings by studying selected buildings of both sacral and secular character in the city of Rome. Through this differentiating comparison between renaissance and baroque, Wolfflin built the foundation of a critique of baroque that overcame the disregard with which it had hitherto been viewed. This edition includes a critical commentary by Karolina Zgraja and an introduction by Oskar Batschmann in which he analyses the work's genesis, historical prerequisites, methodology and reception.
