Deel 2 in de 7-delige serie over de geschiedenis van Amsterdam beschrijft de Beierse periode, 1350 tot 1425. Dit tijdvak beschouwt de auteur als 'het jongelingschap' van Amsterdam, waarin de stad zich ontwikkelt, na een 'ernstigen en harden strijd om 't zelfstandig bestaan' tot de 'vermaardste en vermogendste van Hollands steden'. Amsterdam was toentertijd verwikkeld in verschillende twisten (Amsterdam was Hoeks) en, nu onbekende, oorlogen (de Friese oorlog, de Arkelse oorlog) en andere tweespalt (Amsterdam werd Kabeljauws). Hierdoor kreeg Amsterdam niet alleen veel politieke macht maar groeide ook uit tot 'de voornaamste koopstad van Holland'. De schrijver betreurt het verlies van de zg. Stadsrekeningen, 'op de stroom des tijds weggedreven en vergaan' want zij zouden de beste gids geweest zijn 'langs de donkere paden van 't verleden.' Jan ter Gouw (1814-1894, onderwijzer) heeft zich als geen ander verdiept in de geschiedenis van Amsterdam. In zijn vrije tijd schreef hij vele boeken over zijn geliefde stad (sommige met Jacob van Lennep en soms onder het pseudoniem Joannis Aurelius), waarvoor hij minutieus archiefonderzoek deed. Hoewel Ter Gouw het 18e-eeuwse standaardwerk over de hoofdstad door Jan Wagenaar prijst, vindt hij toch dat hij 'van den grond af weêr beginnen' moet en 'vlijtiglijk' de stadsregisters moet lezen. Over deze zichzelf opgelegde 'reuzentaak' zegt Ter Gouw: 'geen andere prikkel heeft mij daartoe aangespoord dan de liefde tot mijne vaderstad'. De serie, geschreven tussen 1879 en 1891, beslaat 'den vroegsten tijd tot Junij 1578'.
