Obwohl Gesellschaft damit einen wichtigen Untersuchungsgegenstand der Soziologie darstellt, besteht bis heute innerhalb der Disziplin keine gemeinsame Auffassung darüber, was Gesellschaft überhaupt ist. Dies geht z.B. aus einer Definition des Gesellschaftsbegriffes hervor, die Niklas Luhmann in einem Soziologielexikon vorgenommen hat: "Gesellschaft, ist das jeweils umfassendste System menschlichen Zusammenlebens. Über weitere einschränkende Merkmale besteht kein Einverständnis" (Luhmann 1978: 235). Mit der vorliegenden Arbeit soll überprüft werden, inwiefern Luhmann mit seiner Aussage, dass über weitere einschränkende Merkmale des Gesellschaftsbegriffs innerhalb der Soziologie kein Einverständnis besteht, recht behält, wenn der Gesellschaftsbegriff von zwei Klassikern der Soziologie, Émile Durkheim und Georg Simmel, miteinander verglichen wird. Der Vergleich dieser beiden Klassiker, die neben Max Weber und Ferdinand Tönnies zu den Gründern der modernen Soziologie gehören (Rammstedt 1988: 8), bietet sich an, weil beide jeweils den Versuch unternommen haben, die Soziologie als eigenständige Wissenschaftsdisziplin zu gründen. Darüber hinaus standen Durkheim und Simmel zeitweise in Beziehung miteinander, weil sie gemeinsam an der soziologischen Zeitschrift "Année Sociologique" gearbeitet haben (Rammstedt 1997). Diese Zusammenarbeit gibt Grund zu der Annahme, dass Gemeinsamkeiten zwischen Durkheim und Simmel bestanden, die sich unter Umständen beim jeweiligen Gesellschaftsbegriff auffinden lassen. Somit lautet die zentrale Fragestellung der Arbeit: Welche gemeinsamen Merkmale weisen die Gesellschaftsbegriffe von Émile Durkheim und Georg
