About the Book

A detailed depiction of the torpedoing of a World War II Australian merchant vessel and its aftermath.

Book 2 in the Series is a description of the sinking of the SS Iron Chieftain by the famous Japanese submarine I-24 on 3 June 1942 when Allan's grandfather, George Anderson, was aboard.

The SS Iron Chieftain was the first merchant vessel sunk by Japanese submarines off the south-east coast of Australia in World War II. Because of this fact there was media coverage of the sinking which did not occur for subsequent merchant vessel losses. Significant first-hand accounts of the incident were published in the local newspapers. Allan's analysis of the lead up to the sinking of the SS Iron Chieftain cannot help but identify failures by the Australian command chain in the Battle for Australia phase of the Australian Campaign. This book documents these failures.

After the sinking, George Anderson was aboard the lifeboat when the Second Officer ordered ... 'get the oars out' and they rowed to shore. The fate of George Anderson and his crewmates in the hours after the sinking is a tale of loss, luck, endurance and leadership and is indicative of the experience of many who served in Australia's Merchant Navy in World War II.

The Foreword for this book has been written by Allan's Duntroon classmate, Murray Lott, who grew up in Newcastle where his father worked for BHP. After a lengthy career in the Regular Army, Murray retired to Sydney and now spends many days boating and fishing on Sydney Harbour.
