Gilgamesch aus Uruk, einer Siedlung am Euphrat im alten Sumer, ist ein junger Mann rätselhafter Herkunft. Ist er ein Mensch oder ein Halbgott? Darüber streiten sich die Leute in Uruk. Er besitzt eine starke Ausstrahlung, die jeden beeindruckt, er tut Dinge, die niemand sonst wagt. Träume weisen seinen Weg, und es scheint in den Büchern des Schicksals vorgeschrieben zu sein, daß er vom Volk als Held verehrt und schließlich sogar zu König gemacht wird. Sein ehrgeiziger Plan ist, Uruk zu einer richtigen Stadt mit Mauern, Türmen und Hafen zu machen, zu einem bedeutenden Marktplatz. Zielstrebig und durch die magische Kraft seiner Zaubertrommel gestärkt, beginnt er die Vision umzusetzen. Dazu gehört auch, die beiden widerstreitenden Parteien der Anu-Priester und der Dienerinnen des Ischtar-Kultes, die Venus verehren, harmonisch zu verbinden. Obwohl er insgeheim ein Mädchen namens Tehiptilla liebt, ist er aus politischen Gründen bereit, mit der Hohepriesterin Iluna die Heilige Hochzeit zu vollziehen. Aber in Gilgameschs Seele herrscht kein Frieden. Unruhige Traumbilder suchen ihn heim. Er sehnt sich nach einem Freund, nach einem ebenbürtigen Partner. In dem Barbaren Enkidu findet er endlich die erhoffte Ergänzung. Mit ihm bricht er zu waghalsigen Abenteuern auf. Sie unternehmen eine Expedition zum Hermon-Gebirge im Libanon, um dort das wertvolle Zedernholz zu schlagen. Der furchtbare Dämon Chumbawa will das verhindern und kämpft mit den Naturgewalten eines Vulkans gegen sie an. Doch auch hier zeigt sich, dass Gilgameschs Weg vom Schicksal vorgezeichnet ist. Gnädig gestimmte Götter helfen, das Ungeheuer zu bezwingen, und lassen Gilgamesch als strahlenden Sieger nach Uruk heimkehren. Nur der getreue Enkidu muss dafür ein großes Opfer bringen... Das Gilgamesch-Epos vom ewig suchenden Menschen, ist ein großangelegter historischer Fantasy-Roman. Dieser Roman ist, wie die "Welt am Sonntag" schrieb, ein "farbenprächtiges Lesebild der ersten Hochkultur der Menschheit"
