Le lendemain de la mort de Jantes Watt, M. Boulton, qui avait été son associé dans un grand nombre d'entreprises industrielles, convoqua une assemblée des notables habitants de Greenock et de Glasgow, et proposa d'élever une statue à l'homme qui, en créant une nouvelle force, avait changé la face du monde. La statue fut votée par acclamation. De la part de Greenock et de Glasgow, c'était un acte de reconnaissance fort naturel, car James Watt, par ses belles applications de la vapeur à la navigation et à l'industrie, avait fondé du même coup la fortune de Glasgow et Greenock. Il y a une cinquantaine d'années, Glasgow n'était encore qu'une ville de province du troisième ordre, et cependant, dès la fin du VIe siècle, cette ville avait été le siège d'un évêché, avant saint Mungo pour premier titulaire, et en 1611 Jacques VI l'avait érigée en bourg royal; Glasgow comptait alors sept mille six cent quarante-quatre habitants seulement. Dans le dernier siècle, l'esprit inventif et entreprenant de ses habitants était déjà renommé, et sa population commençait à s'accroître. L'horreur de la routine distingue surtout les Écossais; appliquée par les habitants d'Édimbourg aux habitudes religieuses et intellectuelles, cette horreur de la routine a donné naissance à ces nombreuses sectes et à ces divers systèmes de philosophie qui se produisent annuellement dans cette capitale. Les habitants de Glasgow ont tiré un meilleur parti de cette tendance en l'appliquant à l'industrie; ils adoptent sans hésiter, sans même beaucoup chercher à s'en bien rendre compte, toute invention utile; ils accueillirent donc avec empressement les nouveaux procédés de James Watt, et le succès de ces innovations dépassa leurs espérances. De tous côtés s'élevèrent de nouvelles fabriques dans lesquelles afflua une population d'ouvriers tirant leur subsistance de cette vapeur qui leur avait été dépeinte d'abord comme une ennemie, comme la famine elle-même...
