Seine amerikanische Premiere feierte das Stück knapp sechs Monate später im Goodman Theatre in Chicago, und erhielt einen so großen Zuspruch, dass es bereits nach wenigen Wochen an den Broadway verlagert wurde. Nachdem Mamet bereits mit American Buffalo (1973) der nationale wie internationale Durchbruch gelungen war, konnte er sich dank Glengarry Glen Ross als einer der bedeutendsten zeitgenössischen Autoren der Vereinigten Staaten etablieren. Glengarry Glen Ross zeigt einen Ausschnitt von knapp vierundzwanzig Stunden aus dem Leben einer Gruppe von Immobilienverkäufern. Anhand der vier Salesmen Shelly Levene, George Aaronow, Dave Moss und Ricky Roma sowie deren Vorgesetztem John Williamson setzt sich das Stück mit verschiedenen Facetten des Scheiterns auseinander. Als Rahmen der Handlung dient dabei ein Einbruch in das Maklerbüro. Gegliedert in zwei Akte, führt der erste Akt in einer Sequenz dreier dialogischer Einzelszenen in die Welt der Salesmen ein, wobei das Dominanzstreben der Figuren im Mittelpunkt steht. Der zweite Akt führt die einzelnen Zwiegespräche zusammen und bringt die etablierten Machtverhältnisse ins Wanken. Indem schlussendlich alle Hauptfiguren versagen, problematisiert das Stück die Auswirkungen des kapitalistischen Systems auf Individuum und Gemeinschaft. Aus diesem Grund konzentrieren sich Rezensenten des Dramas vorwiegend auf den Aspekt der Gesellschafts- und Systemkritik.
