About the Book

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) gilt als einer der bedeutendsten Repräsentanten deutschsprachiger Dichtung. Goethe war Vorbereiter und wichtigster Vertreter des Sturm und Drang. Goethes erster Roman, Die Leiden des jungen Werthers, wurde zu einem der größten Erfolge der deutschen Literaturgeschichte. Der Verfasser bediente sich einer für das 18. Jahrhundert typischen Erzählform, des Briefromans. Aber er radikalisierte dieses Genre, indem er keinen Briefwechsel zwischen Romanfiguren darstellte, sondern einen monologischen Briefroman schrieb. In Dichtung und Wahrheit bekennt er, dass er mit dem Roman zum ersten Mal von seinem Leben dichterischen Gebrauch gemacht habe. Seinen frühen europäischen Ruf verdankte er diesem Roman, der 1800 in den meisten europäischen Sprachen greifbar war. Selbst Napoleon kam bei der historischen Begegnung mit Goethe am 2. Oktober 1808 in Erfurt auf dieses Buch zu sprechen. Eine zentrale Stellung in Goethes epischem Werk nehmen die Wilhelm Meister-Romane ein. Der Roman Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre gilt als "Auftakt zur Geschichte des Bildungs- und Entwicklungsromans" im deutschsprachigen Bereich.
