Ihre Passagiere wurden angelockt von den Nachrichten über die sensationellen und unermeßlichen Goldfunde in Kalifornien. Sie alle träumen von Reichtum, den sie mühelos zu erwerben hoffen. Doch bevor sie auch nur eine Unze Gold finden können, gehen viele von ihnen Falschspielern und skrupellosen Glücksrittern auf den Leim. In den Minen herrscht das Faustrecht. Mit Mord, Totschlag und Brandstiftung wird das Glück herbeigezwungen. Menschen aus aller Herren Länder begegnen sich am Golden Gate. Schließlich finden sich einige ehrliche Leute zusammen und beschließen, unter der Führung des entschlossenen Sheriffs Hale und des integren Alkalden Hetson den Banditen und Spielern entgegen zu treten und ihren Machenschaften ein Ende zu bereiten.

Der Autor
Friedrich Gerstäcker (1816-1872) war der Sohn eines bekannten Opernsängers in Hamburg. 1837, animiert von Robinson Crusoe und anderen Abenteuererzählungen seiner Zeit, ging er nach Amerika und bereiste einen großen Teil der Vereinigten Staaten. In dieser Zeit arbeitete er in den verschiedensten Berufen und nahm jede Arbeit an, die er bekommen konnte, u.a. als Feuerwehrmann auf einem Dampfer, als Decksmann, als Farmer, Silberschmied und Händler. Er verbrachte einige Zeit als Jäger und Fallensteller im Indianer-Territorium und führte ein Hotel in Louisiana. Nach sechs Jahren kehrte er 1843 nach Deutschland zurück.
Während seiner Reisen hatte er Tagebuch geführt und diese Tagebücher regelmäßig nach Hause geschickt. Seine Mutter hatte seine Abenteuerbeschreibungen einem Verleger gezeigt. Als Gerstäcker nach Deutschland zurückkehrte fand er sich dort bereits als berühmter Autor. 1845 erschien sein erster Roman, die Regulatoren in Arkansas.
Wenige Jahre später brach er erneut zur einen großen Reise auf, reiste auf einem Walfänger, wanderte durch Australien und erlebte den Goldrausch in Kalifornien. Sein Werk umfasst 44 Bände und wurde von vielen anderen Autoren imitiert oder adaptiert, darunter auch Karl May. Auch Theater und Film bedienten sich bei ihm. Bekannt sind außer den Regulatoren vor allem die Flusspiraten des Mississippi und Gold.
