About the Book

English summary: The German composer and critic Otto Lessmann issued the cultural and political battle cry "More Handel!" during World War I. The constants of the "Handel-image," including the sublime, the Germanic, the creation of community, the heroic, and the combative, are addressed in the studies collected in this volume. Lessmann's article from 1915 served as the heuristic point-of-departure for the symposium from which these studies were drawn and which has hardly been analyzed in the previous scholarly literature concerning the reception of Handel on the eve of World War I. To what extent did Handel play a role in either the theological or musical debates in Germany before the First World War? And what was the "pitch"? Further questions consider the reception of Handel in the French and English musical cultures of the period before the Great War.
