Le présent volume s'inscrit dans un projet global de grammaire des marqueurs discursifs du français. Le terme de grammaire signifie que les marqueurs discursifs constituent une classe d'unités de la langue: ils se caractérisent par un ensemble de propriétés formelles (une syntaxe) et une sémantique. Il est possible de distinguer plusieurs sous-classes, chacune se définissant par des propriétés et une sémantique particulières.

Cet ouvrage est consacré à l'étude de la sous-classe de marqueurs discursifs que constitue trente formes en -ment, qui, par ailleurs, sont des adverbes: précisément, forcément, vraiment, etc.

Leur sémantique est décrite sur deux plans. Ils partagent une sémantique commune: la séquence correspondant à leur portée est définie comme une manifestation singulière d'une catégorie ou propriété correspondant à la base: le 'simple', le 'probable', le 'visible', etc. D'où leur définition comme marqueurs discursifs « catégorisants ». Quant à l'identité discursive de chaque marqueur, elle est définie compte tenu de la sémantique de la base. Ces marqueurs sont regroupés en sept groupes en fonction de leur proximité sémantique.

Cette identité sémantique est redéployée sur quatre plans de variation qui rendent compte de la diversité de leurs emplois et valeurs. La portée du marqueur est soit globale (énoncé), soit locale (incise et parenthèse). Son point d'incidence par rapport à sa portée varie: position initiale, médiane et finale. Il peut être détaché ou non-détaché de sa portée. Enfin, la séquence correspondant à sa portée entre dans un rapport de continuité - discontinuité avec le contexte gauche.

Les valeurs et emplois de chaque marqueur discursif sont illustrés par de nombreux exemples en relation avec les quatre plans de variation.

Denis Paillard est Directeur de recherche honoraire (CNRS). Ses travaux en syntaxe et sémantique portent sur le français, le russe et le khmer. Auteur de nombreux travaux sur les marqueurs discursifs, il a dirigé le numéro 207 de la revue Langages consacré à la comparaison des marqueurs discursifs.
