Nel 1565 il Sultano Solimano il Magnifico decise l'invasione di Malta: oltre 40.000 turchi, capitanati da Mustafa Pascià e Piali Pascià e dal grande corsaro Dragut mossero contro le difese dell'isola, presidiate dai Cavalieri italiani, aragonesi, castigliani, francesi e tedeschi dell'Ordine di Malta e da armati spagnoli e maltesi, guidati dalla mano ferma del Gran Maestro La Valette. L'ocra delle mura dei forti a S. Elmo, Birgu e Senglea e il cobalto delle acque del Porto Grande scomparvero sotto il continuo bombardamento dei pezzi d'assedio turchi, tra il fumo e le fiamme delle armi incendiarie e degli archibugi dei difensori, e per mesi assediati e assedianti si affrontarono in scontri senza quartiere, tra assalti di massa e stratagemmi, eroismi e tradimenti. È giunto a noi un solo diario di un testimone oculare di questa famosa battaglia: la relazione dell'archibugiere dell'armata spagnola Francesco Balbi da Correggio, stampata nel 1567, che qui presentiamo. Per tutto l'assedio, Balbi annota con minuzia non solo i quotidiani combattimenti e i protagonisti dei fatti d'arme, dal Gran Maestro La Valette, al Sultano Solimano, al corsaro Dragut, dai più valorosi tra i cavalieri al rinnegato calabrese Ociali... ma anche la vita e le sofferenze della guarnigione e della popolazione, oltre a lasciarci la sua personale testimonianza a "raso di trincea". A corredo del testo, moltissime immagini tra litografie e affreschi ritraenti le fasi salienti dell'assedio, fotografie a colori Then and Now dei luoghi dei combattimenti e delle armature dei Gran Maestri e dei Cavalieri dell'Ordine di Malta.
About the Author: Francesco Balbi (Reggio Emilia, 16 marzo 1505 - 12 dicembre 1589) e stato uno scrittore e militare italiano, ha servito come archibugiere il contingente spagnolo durante l'assedio di Malta che del 1565 a opera dei Turchi Ottomani. Egli e la principale fonte storica e diretta degli eventi del grande assedio in quanto trascrisse dettagliatamente i fatti in un suo personale diario che fu in seguito ripreso e pubblicato.
