About the Book

The climate change is primarily caused by the greenhouse effect that increases through human activities and more specifically by carbon dioxide (CO2). This mainly happens because of the human need to produce more energy, so it can be used in services and in production. Obviously WWW is part of the problem since it is supported by a large number of data centers, which main function is to provide guaranteed reliable service, security and connectivity to the rest of the Internet via a high-capacity backbone. Data centers consume significant amounts of energy. According to News York Times data centers in the United States consume more than 1 billion watts of electricity each year. The aim of this book is to study possible methods that can be applied to media websites in order to reduce power consumption and to educate internet users on environmental issues. Some of the issues that the study addresses are: Whether the servers are powered by renewable sources of energy, the ecological graphic design of the websites, and the existence of energy saving mode, the prevention of printing articles, whether newspapers inform their readers about environmental issues and the interdependence or participation in actions related to environment protection.
About the Author: www.antonopoulos.info Antonopoulos Nikos is candidate for PhD degree in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He received his BSc in Information Technology and Telecommunications at the Higher Technological Educational Institute of Larissa, MSc in Cultural Informatics and Communication at the Aegean University. He is the author of 3 international and 2 national Conference papers. His research interests include online media, human-computer interaction, social networking and computer art. www.blogs.auth.gr/veglis Andreas Veglis is Associate Professor, head of the Media Informatics Lab in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He received his BSc in Physics, MSc in Electronics and Communications, and PhD in Computer Science, all from Aristotle University. In November of 2010 he was elected head of the postgraduate programme of the School of Journalism and Mass Communications, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. In March of 2012 he was elected Deputy Chairman of the Department of Journalism Mass Media Communication. His research interests include information technology in journalism, new media, course support environments, and distance learning. He is the author or co-author of ten books, he has published 50 papers on scientific journals and he has presented 65 papers in international and national Conferences. Dr. Veglis has been involved in 11 national and international research projects.
