Durant toute son existence, Gregoire de Nazianze fut tiraille entre l'aspiration a la vie contemplative que lui offrait l'existence monastique et la necessite de s'impliquer de maniere plus active dans les affaires de son temps. Ne en 330 dans la petite ville de Cappadoce qui porte son nom, il etudia a Cesaree, a Alexandrie et a Athenes. A son retour en Cappadoce, il se laissa convaincre par son ami Basile de devenir eveque de Sasime afin de defendre contre les ariens l'orthodoxie trinitaire du concile de Nicee. Son existence mouvementee devait ensuite le conduire a Constantinople ou il prit la tete d'un groupe de chretiens orthodoxes aupres de l'empereur Theodose et ou il organisa le concile oecumenique de 381. Il reprit ensuite le chemin de Nazianze en juillet 381 et mourut en 390.

La tradition nous a legue une abondante litterature poetique ecrite par ce saint. Le premier tome de cette oeuvre presente dans la Collection des Universites de France comprend deux longs poemes d'inspiration autobiographique ainsi qu'une serie de poemes plus courts. Certains de ces derniers poemes sont d'inspiration theologique: dans l'un d'entre eux, Gregoire prete le serment de ne pas trahir la divinite du Saint-Esprit. D'autres poemes sont d'inspiration plus personnelle comme celui ou le saint adresse ses adieux a la ville de Constantinople. Dans les deux poemes autobiographique qui constituent la principale partie de l'oeuvre poetique de Saint Gregoire, l'eveque de Constantinople exprime son desarroi, sa vocation intellectuelle contrariee et des situations difficiles vecues dans son passe.

Le premier volume de l'oeuvre poetique de Saint Gregoire dans l'edition des Belles Lettres presente le texte des poemes accompagne de la traduction de Jean Bernardi. Le texte est precede d'une introduction ou est evoquee la vie du saint et ou sont presentes ses poemes et la maniere dont ils nous sont parvenus.
