About the Book

Grit, Grace & Goats opens an intimate window into life on a Nigerian Dwarf goat farm in Maine. Mini memoirs allow readers to step into a day at the farm and come away with a new perspective on life. Even city folks will find experiences that translate to paths to feeling more human. The delightful collection also includes the creamery's delicious recipes for goat milk chèvre, feta, yogurt, cajeta, caramels and fudge. This issue is full of heart melting photos taken by the author Hope Hall and also showcases photographer Catherine Frost, who shot stunning portraits of each member of Sunflower Farm's goat herd. Grit, Grace & Goats is the perfect gift for anyone who loves goats and wants to learn more about local, humane farming. It includes nitty-gritty tips that will help if you plan to make the leap into tending your own herd and plenty of big-picture thinking to remind you why you dream of small farming! The book even includes instructions for making a 3D felted goat sculpture and a knitting pattern for making a goat sweater for those who are looking for goat inspired crafting ideas. Part 2 of the collection, due out August 2018, will include exciting coverage of the ups and downs of kidding season. 50 Nigerian Dwarf goat kids are expected to arrive over two weeks in April! You can also look forward to lots of tasty recipes highlighting goat milk products, a story about goat yoga, a design plan for building a low waste hay feeder, tips on building a licensed cheese kitchen, advice for when kidding does not go like clockwork and more goaty goodness. About the Author: As a high school English teaching veteran, Nigerian Dwarf Goat Farmer and Dairy Owner, contributing writer for Zest Magazine and yoga teacher, Hope Hall believes her passion for all these jobs is rooted in her desire to see connections instead of barriers. When Hope, her husband Chris and daughters Lila and Tess bought a run down farm property 8 years ago, they knew virtually nothing about farming and had no business plan, but they let curiosity and joy be their guide in this second job. They now have a herd of 27 goats on their No Cull Farm, make goat cheese, yogurt, caramels and fudge, and help out with the birth of around 50 babies who are born each spring. Many folks visit online by watching the 24/7 webcam, and the Farm YouTube channel which has over 21 million views. Thousands have also come in person over the years to Sunflower Farm to visit the goats, buy products and take classes, and because so many are now willing to make the trip, the farm is now able to sell 100% of their products from a farm self serve shop. Hope completed her 200 hour yoga teacher training program last fall with Sacred Seeds and now leads yoga at the farm where sometimes up to 80 people gather in the field to downward dog with goats and try goat cheese and snuggle babies after practice. Her classroom, farm, and yoga classes have allowed Hall to create small spaces where people can come together to celebrate what makes us feels most human in this sometimes crazy world. As a new grandma, Hope is eager to show that we can be strong and bold at any age and is fueled by the belief that there are endless opportunities for reinvention and connection with others if we remain open to them.
