The 2014 Ford Freedom Award celebrates those who have demonstrated the power of perseverance and their unwavering commitment to their community. Cynthia was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. After graduating from Eastern Michigan University with a master's degree in psychology and counseling, she worked in cognitive behavioral therapy and trauma-focused therapy for over twenty-seven years. Cynthia utilized art therapy to reach children, adolescents and adults who experienced trauma in their lives and to assist them in their personal healing process. In her personal memoir, Cynthia vividly describes how she faced the immense challenges of her youth. In addition to writing, Cynthia is a highly respected and accomplished artist specializing in nautical, seascape and landscape oils.
