En Guerra de razas Rafael Conte Mayolino y José María Capmany relatan los hechos sucedidos durante el Levantamiento armado de los Independientes de color. Ambos autores fueron testigos presenciales del conflicto militar ocurrido en 1912, en Cuba. En esta guerra civil de corta duración se enfrentaron rebeldes de raza negra y los Ejércitos de Cuba y los Estados Unidos.

Los autores se desplazaron hacia la zona de guerra en el oriente de la isla. La acción del ejército cubano, y la entrada de los marines americanos puso fin a la rebelión en cuestión de semanas.

La cifra final de víctimas del conflicto ha sido motivo de polémica. Se calcula que murieron entre 3.000 y 6.000 rebeldes. Apenas hubo bajas entre los miembros del Ejército cubano y los marines.

Conte Mayolino y Capmany defienden la postura oficial del gobierno cubano. Afirman que:


Por lo demás, el conflicto no es nuevo, ni obedece (como propalan algunos maliciosos) a determinadas causas de orden local. Los cubanos caucásicos y los cubanos africanos luchan entre sí por las mismas razones que desde que el mundo es mundo han tenido para combatir y exterminarse los hombres de distinto origen. Es el problema eterno: desde los tiempos más remotos, toda la historia de la humanidad se ha reducido a una perpetua e implacable lucha de razas. Cuba no ha podido sustraerse a la ley general. Y menos mal que se tratara de grupos étnicos afines, oriundos de una misma raza madre, pues en este caso podría esperarse que con el transcurso de los siglos acabarían por mezclarse y confundirse, como se confundieron y mezclaron los blancos germánicos de Ataulfo y Alarico, con los blancos latinos de las provincias romanas; pero, tratándose como se trata de caucásicos y etiópicos, la mezcla es imposible, puesto que ni aun por medio del cruzamiento continuado y científico, puede lograrse la desaparición total de una de las dos razas en provecho de la otra.


Para ellos no hay otra solución que el triunfo de una raza sobre la otra. Hemos publicado también Los independientes de color. Se trata de una obra escrita por un descendiente de un veterano de raza negra que militó en el Partido Independiente de Color, que ofrece una visión opuesta de los hechos.
