Les Commentaires sur la Guerre des Gaules (en latin: Commentarii de Bello Gallico), ou simplement La Guerre des Gaules (Bellum Gallicum ou De Bello Gallico), sont un ouvrage d'histoire en sept livres où Jules César raconte sa victorieuse guerre des Gaules (58 - 52); il est complété par un huitième livre, écrit plus tard par Aulus Hirtius. Les Commentaires sont constitués de notes rédigées au fur et à mesure de la guerre, dans lesquelles il relate ses opérations militaires (pour une bonne part c'est en fait la collation des rapports qu'il rédigeait, en partie avec ses lieutenants, pour les envoyer au Sénat qui surveillait l'activité des proconsuls tels que César). Les dates et conditions de publication de l'oeuvre font débat: une publication unique après la défaite de Vercingétorix, ou bien sous forme de lettres parues séparément, ou encore une publication en trois fois. La copie la plus ancienne est carolingienne, ce qui en fait une des plus anciennes copies complètes de l'Antiquité classique. La Guerre des Gaules est la seule source de première main disponible pour ceux qui s'intéressent à la Guerre des Gaules: les textes de Tite-Live sont perdus, et aucun autre ouvrage contemporain conservé n'évoque le sujet. Son auteur étant le principal protagoniste de la conquête, sa fiabilité a souvent été mise en doute. Tout d'abord par d'autres témoins de l'entourage de César ayant une vision différente (notamment Asinius Pollion, dont ne subsistent malheureusement que quelques fragments), puis par les pourfendeurs du césarisme, comme Montaigne, qui dans ses Essais dénonce les fausses couleurs de quoi [César] veut couvrir sa mauvaise cause et l'ordure de sa pestilente ambition . À partir du milieu du xixe siècle, le débat passe du plan idéologique au plan beaucoup plus scientifique. About the Author: Jules César (latin: Caius Iulius Caesar IV à sa naissance, Imperator Iulius Caesar Divus après sa mort) est un général, homme politique et écrivain romain, né à Rome le 12 ou le 13 juillet 100 av. J.-C. et mort le 15 mars 44 av. J.-C. (aux ides de mars)5, dans la même ville. Son destin exceptionnel marqua le monde romain et l'histoire universelle: ambitieux et brillant, il s'appuya sur le courant réformateur et démagogue pour son ascension politique; stratège et tacticien habile, il repoussa les frontières romaines jusqu'au Rhin et à l'océan Atlantique en conquérant la Gaule, puis utilisa ses légions pour s'emparer du pouvoir. Il se fit nommer dictateur à vie, et fut assassiné peu après par une conspiration de sénateurs. Il fut divinisé et son fils adoptif Octave, vainqueur de Marc Antoine, acheva la réforme de la République romaine, qui laissa place au principat et à l'Empire romain.
