About the Book

Michel Ordener s'engage en 1773 dans la cavalerie, à l'âge de dix-huit ans. Les nouveaux principes de la Révolution lui permettent de devenir officier et ses brillants états de service d'accéder au commandement du 10e régiment de chasseurs à cheval à l'âge de quarante et un ans. Il est alors remarqué pour sa bravoure par le général en chef Bonaparte lors de la campagne d'Italie de 1796-1797. Devenu Premier Consul, celui-ci lui confie le commandement des grenadiers à cheval de sa garde qui s'organise. Avec la rigueur, l'exigence et la bienveillance qui avaient été siennes au 10e chasseurs à cheval, le général Ordener va forger la belle réputation de solidité, de valeur et de discipline de cette unité d'élite. Homme droit et loyal, il est désigné par Bonaparte pour commander les troupes envoyées en Allemagne arrêter le duc d'Enghien au mois de mars 1804. Ordener s'acquitte avec tact et efficacité de cette mission de confiance, faisant arrêter le duc par les gendarmes sous la protection d'un détachement de dragons et le ramène à Strasbourg. L'année suivante, le général Ordener prend part à la campagne contre l'Autriche avec la cavalerie de la Garde impériale. Il chargeant brillamment à la bataille d'Austerlitz et défait complètement les chevaliers-gardes du tsar avec ses grenadiers à cheval, contribuant ainsi grandement au succès de la journée.De retour à Paris, Napoléon s'attache ses services en qualité de premier écuyer de l'Impératrice. Une fois encore reconnu pour sa loyauté envers ses souverains, il sert pendant quatre années auprès de Joséphine et retrouve son ami le prince Eugène qui fut aussi son adjoint dans la cavalerie de la Garde.Après le divorce impérial, le général Ordener est nommé gouverneur du château de Compiègne où il décède brusquement en 1811, trois jours avant son cinquante-sixième anniversaire.Faisant preuve d'une éclatante bravoure, d'une connaissance approfondie du métier et d'une réelle intelligence des situations, Michel Ordener constitue aujourd'hui encore l'incarnation de la VALEUR et de la DISCIPLINE... deux mots qui figuraient en lettres d'or sur l'étendard des grenadiers à cheval de la Garde qu'il commandait.
