About the Book

"Haabløse Slægter" var Herman Bangs debutroman. En delvis selvbiografisk historie om en ung mand, der føler, at han er det sidste skud på en degenereret slægts stamme. William Høg er en drømmer, en fantast, der ikke magter tilværelsen. Men det er også en tynget atmosfære, han vokser op i med en mor, der er mærket af tuberkulose og senere dør af sygdommen og en far med manio-depressiv psykose. Men den stolte arv fremtræder som en arvelig belastning. Hvad forfædrene præsterede i virkeligheden, vil William præstere på scenen, men kommer til kort som skuespiller. I skildringen af heltens barndom byggede Herman Bang på sine egne barndomsoplevelser: Utrygheden ved faderen, hvis manio-depressive psykose længst muligt søges skjult for omverdenen, og en desto stærkere binding til moderen, hvis død af tuberkulose giver William (som den gav Bang) et ulægeligt sår. Hans moderbinding får ham til at falde for meget ældre kvinder; skildringen af et sådant forhold vakte anstød og gav anledning til tiltale og dom for pornografi. Da "Håbløse slægter" ved Højesteret var dømt usædelig, blev restoplaget beslaglagt og politiet måttet besøge alle landets boglader for at konfiskere ikke solgte kopier. I 1884 udgav Bang en revideret udgave, der kunne passere gennem censuren. I 1905 udkom en tredje udgave med nyt forord af forfatteren.
About the Author: Herman Bang (1857-1912) var en dansk kritiker, forfatter og journalist, der er international anerkendt for sin impressionistiske skrivestil. Han debuterede 22 år gammel som litteraturkritiker i 1879 med essay-samlingen "Realisme og Realister", som også slog en ny retning i litteraturen fast. Året efter fulgte den første novellesamling "Tunge Melodier" og den skandaleombruste roman Haabløse Slægter. I 1886 kom novellesamlingen Stille Eksistenser med bl.a. fortællingen Ved Vejen. Blandt andre hovedværker er romanerne Stuk, Tine, Ludvigsbakke og Det hvide Hus. Der stod i samtiden megen blæst om Bangs værker og han var livet igennem gestand for megen medieopmærksomhed og deciderede smædekampagner, dels på grund af hans værker, der blev anset for at være provokerende (han blev som 23-årige straffet for usædelighed og første oplag af "Håbløse Slægter" konfiskeret), dels fordi han var erklæret homoseksuel - et stort tabu sidst i det 19. Århundrede. Herman Bangs værker er fremragende eksempler på dansk litterær impressionisme.
