Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2002 im Fachbereich Ethnologie / Volkskunde, Note: 2,5, Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: E.Wade Davis macht sich in seiner Feldforschung auf der Suche nach dem Gift mit dem auf Haiti die Zombies von den Vodoun-Prister erschafften wurden. Dabei findet er nicht nur das Gift, sondern eine komplexe Geheimgesellschaft, die eine Regierung neben der offiziellen darstellt. E. Wade Davis, ein amerikanischer Ethnobotaniker, behandelt in seinem Buch "The Serpent and the Rainbow" (1985) das Zombie‐Phänomen auf Haiti, er geht dabei auch auf die Vodoun‐Religion und die Geheimgesellschaft Bizango ein. Vodoun ist ein Wort aus den Fon‐Sprache und "bedeutet einfach Gott oder Geist" (Davis 1986: 11). Das Wort begegnet einem in den unterschiedlichsten Schreibweisen, unter anderem "wodu", "voodoo" oder "vodo". Ich werde mich im folgenden Text an die Schreibweise von E. Wade Davis halten: vodoun. Ich beziehe mich bei der Arbeit vorwiegend auf Davis' "The Serpent and the Rainbow" und werde andere Autoren zur Ergänzung oder zur Gegenüberstellung heranziehen. Aus "The Serpent and the Rainbow" habe ich mir verschiedene Aspekte als Schwerpunkt gesucht, wie zum Beispiel die Geschichte Haitis, die Geheimgesellschaft 'der Bizangos und das Gift um Menschen zu Zombies zu machen, die ich versuchen werde näher zu erläutern und eventuell durch die Forschungsergebnisse und Meinungen der anderer Autoren zu ergänzen. Während ich auf die einzelnen Aspekte eingehe, werde ich, soweit es mir möglich ist, versuchen Verbindungen zu Afrika herzustellen, da der Vodoun und die Geheimgesellschaft der Bizango ihren Ursprung in diesem Land haben. In der Zeit des Sklavenhandels gelangten die verschiedenen Religionen nach Haiti und vermischten sich hier mit Elementen des haitianischen Vodoun.
