About the Book

Im Jahr 1853 erwirbt der Zimmermann Franz Müser ein Stück Ackerland im Osten der Stadt Hamm. Er errichtet dort ein Haus, das zum Lebensmittelpunkt für ihn und seine Familie wird. Als er 1912 in seinem Haus stirbt, hat er dort fast 60 Lebensjahre verbracht.

Das Buch dokumentiert diese Entwicklung an Hand von Originaldokumenten, die dem Autor zugänglich gemacht wurden, und die über die Geschichte des Hausbesitzers hinausgreift. Denn das Beziehungsgeflecht, das sich um den Hauseigentümer spannt, besteht nicht nur aus der eigenen Familie, sondern umfasst auch die Verpächter des Grundstücks, das einer Erbpacht unterliegt.

Eine Besonderheit ist zudem die Tatsache, dass der jüdische Handelsmann Isaak David Blumenthal aus dem nahen Heessen dem katholischen Zimmermann Franz Müser ein Darlehn gewährt, das erst nach dem Tod des Handelsmann durch seine Kinder vom Hausbesitzer eingefordert wird. Dabei werden erstmals Dokumente ausgewertet, die einen Einblick in die familiären und finanziellen Verhältnisse der jüdischen Kaufmannsfamilie Blumenthal nach dem Tod Isaak Davids geben. So enthält das Konvolut der Dokumente, die im Wortlaut wiedergegeben werden, auch drei Verträge über die Erbauseinandersetzungen der Familie Blumenthal, die bisher unbekannt waren. Sie werden zu dem bisher im nordrhein-westfälischen Staatsarchiv, Abteilung Westfalen, vorliegenden Testament des Ehepaars Isaak Davis Blumenthal und Bernhardine Blumenthal geborene Philipps in Beziehung gesetzt.

Letztlich muss der Zimmermann Franz Müser die Finanzierung seines Hauses auf neue Beine stellen und löst das Darlehn der Blumenthals durch eines der Sparkasse Hamm ab. Nach einigen Unwägbarkeiten - so wird sein Haus bei einem Unwetter schwer beschädigt - kann er das Darlehn ablösen und kann sein Haus an einen seiner Söhne übergeben. Dieser Übertragungsvertrag regelt schließlich auch seinen Verbleib im Haus auf einem auskömmlichen Altenteil.
