About the Author: James J. Gross, PhD, is the Ernest R. Hilgard Professor of Psychology at Stanford University, where he directs the Stanford Psychophysiology Laboratory. With over 600 publications, Dr. Gross was founding president of the Society for Affective Science. He is the recipient of research awards from the American Psychological Association, the Society for Psychophysiological Research, and the Social and Affective Neuroscience Society, and of the inaugural Mentorship Award from the Society for Affective Science. At Stanford, he has received the Dean's Award for Distinguished Teaching, the Phi Beta Kappa Teaching Prize, the Postdoctoral Mentoring Award (twice), and the Walter J. Gores Award for Excellence in Teaching. Dr. Gross has been awarded honorary doctorates from UCLouvain in Belgium and Tilburg University in the Netherlands, and is a Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science, the American Psychological Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Brett Q. Ford, PhD, is Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Toronto, Canada, where she directs the Affective Science and Health Laboratory. Dr. Ford's research examines emotion regulation, focusing on understanding both the benefits and the costs of striving to feel good. She has published more than 50 journal articles and book chapters, and has presented her work widely at conferences in Canada and the United States. Dr. Ford is a Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science and a recipient of the Association's Rising Star Award and Janet Taylor Spence Award for Transformative Early Career Contributions. She has also received the Rising Star Award from the Association for Research in Personality; the Early Researcher Award from the Government of Ontario; and the Connaught New Researcher Award, Pre-Tenure Faculty Research Award, and Dean's Special Merit Award from the University of Toronto.
