Länder - Neueste Geschichte, Europäische Einigung, Note: 1,3, Universität Erfurt (Philosophische Fakultät), Veranstaltung: Hauptseminar: 'The American Empire and the Atlantic World', Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Nachdem Gerhard Schröder Anfang August 2002 eine militärische Beteiligung Deutschlands an einem Krieg Amerikas gegen den Irak ausgeschlossen hatte, war in vielen deutschen Medien von einer Belastung oder gar Schwächung der Beziehungen zwischen Deutschland und Amerika die Rede. Laut Wahlanalysten soll der entschlossene Standpunkt Schröders sogar in entscheidendem Maße zum Wahlsieg der SPD beigetragen haben. In diesem Umfeld ist eine Debatte belebt und auf ein neues Niveau gehoben worden, die in der Vergangenheit schon des öfteren geführt wurde. Es geht um die Rolle der USA in der Weltpolitik sowie ihre Ziele und dafür eingesetzten Methoden, welche selbst bei sogenannten "befreundeten" Staaten mitunter auf Skepsis stoßen. Die Diskussion um einen erneuten Militärschlag gegen den Irak hat durch die harte Haltung des Bundeskanzlers den Blick der deutschen Öffentlichkeit auf die Weltmachtrolle der USA wieder verschärft. Ausgehend vom Bundestagswahlkampf sind die deutsch-amerikanischen Beziehungen zum dominierenden außenpolitischen Thema des zweiten Halbjahres 2002 geworden, welches quer durch alle Medien verarbeitet wurde und der vorliegenden Arbeit Aktualität und Relevanz verleiht. Zunächst werde ich die wesentlichen Punkte der Änderungen in der US-amerikanischen Außenpolitik seit dem Amtsantritt von George W. Bush aufzeigen und die aktuelle Debatte um die Weltmachtrolle der USA sowie ihren Bezug auf Deutschland historisch einordnen. Darauf folgt die Darstellung einiger Faktoren vor dem Bundestagswahlkampf, die zu Gerhard Schröders später getroffenen Entscheidung beigetragen haben könnten.
