Sería redundante explicar el lugar de Metahistoria en la filosofía de la historia del siglo XX, obra de Hayden White cuyo 40a aniversario da lugar a la presente compilación. Los quince artículos que la conforman analizan en profundidad el libro y sus múltiples recepciones, ofreciéndose como una propuesta superadora dentro de un contexto donde todavía hoy pueden encontrarse numerosas publicaciones dirigidas a alcanzar una definición, muchas veces de naturaleza un tanto general, acerca de si dicho libro constituye o no una amenaza a la práctica historiográfica, y acerca de si sus aportes teóricos han (o no han) pasado ya de moda. El libro que tenemos el honor de presentar advierte, por el contrario, que si bien las herramientas metahistóricas whiteanas efectivamente promueven una mirada no ingenua hacia los escritos históricos, lo hacen con la finalidad de que nos detengamos en la escritura misma.
La indagación en las consecuencias éticas y epistémicas de nuestros modos de hablar o escribir no tiene por qué estar motivada por un propósito desenmascarador ni implicar que la historia es un engaño. Más bien es un estímulo para agudizar nuestras dotes de lectores. Una vida dedicada a la teoría y la filosofía de la historia y un legado de conceptos teóricos complejos en calidad de "claves" de lectura de la escritura histórica ("metahistoria", "tropología", "prefiguración", "narrativización", "realismo figural", "acontecimiento modernista", "pasado práctico" -para nombrar los más citados y usados) habilita a esperar y promover otras recepciones de White. Los artículos que componen la presente compilación configuran sin dudas un ejemplo de esa otra, más sofisticada, menos pomposa pero más detallista recepción de la obra whiteana, invitando o convocando a compartir esa combinación de claves de lectura y nuevas lecturas propias de grandes pensadores como nuestro maestro White.

Julio Bentivoglio es Profesor Asociado de Teoría de la Historia en la Universidad Federal de Espírito Santo (Brasil), Vice-Director del Centro de Humanidades y Ciencias Naturales.
Verónica Tozzi es Investigadora Principal del CONICET, Profesora de Filosofía de la historia (UBA) y de Epistemología de las Ciencias sociales (UNTREF).
