Ein dichter Nebel lag drei Tage über dem Waldland, dann kam die scharfe Kälte, und nun hat der Wald sein schönstes Weihnachtskleid angezogen. Wie feierliche Kandelaber sind die alten Schirmtannen, die oben auf der freien Höhe stehen, nur daß sie ihren Kerzenschmuck nach unten hängen. Tief bis auf den Boden senken sich ihre Äste unter der schweren Last, die nun ein heimliches Nest bilden, von dem man sich denken möchte, daß darunter irgend ein frierendes Häslein oder Reh ein Obdach fände. Die Birken sind mit tausend und aber tausend Kristallperlen behangen, und an ihr feines Gefieder hat sich der Rauhreif angesetzt, wo ein Blattknöspchen auf den kommenden Frühling wartet, daß es läßt, als wollte der Baum mitten im Winter seinen Mai haben, aber einen silbernen. Jedes Möslein am Weg, der Dornstrauch dort, aus dessen kristallenem Gezweig noch die roten Beeren hervorleuchten, alle haben sich in köstliche Festgewänder geworfen. Wie zierlich und fein steht der Distel ihr Silberkrönlein, wie ist aus dem geduckten Schlehenstrauche das Meisterstück eines Elfensilberschmieds geworden! Ganz still ist's, und nur zuweilen geht ein feines Klingen durch den Wald, und ein Seufzen, wenn ein Zweig einen Teil seiner Last, die ihm zu schwer geworden ist, abschüttelt. Die Buchen sind ganz dicht geworden, und auf den Weg, über dem sie wieder, wie im Sommer, doch nun aus edlem Weiß, Silber und Kristall, den gotischen Dom bilden, fällt ein wunderbares gedämpftes Licht von dem fünften nebelgrauen Himmel, der doch ein mattes Sonnengold ahnen läßt. Der Haselbusch hat sich mit breiten silbernen Bändern behängt, die in seltsamen Bogen und Windungen seine Zweige verbinden. Spinnfäden sind's, und wie würde sich die emsige Spinnerin, die nun längst wie ein totes welkes Blättlein über ihren noch schlafenden Kindlein hängt, verwundern, wenn sie sehen könnte, was aus ihrem Gespinst geworden. Fliegt ein Vogel auf, so stiebt ein Wölkchen von silbernen Sternen, und wie sie fallen, so liegen sie auf dem W
