In der bewegten Geschichte Heinrich Manns ist die Zeit seines Frühwerks der wahrscheinlich interessanteste Wendepunkt seines schriftstellerischen Lebens. Seine Literatur ist unausgereift und ein Entwicklungsprozess, der ihn zu dem Autor macht den wir heute kennen. Über die Lyrik in den frühen 1890er Jahren kommt er zu seinen ersten Romanen für die im besonderen "Im Schlaraffenland" (1900), "Professor Unrat"(1905), der wohl bekannteste hier, und "Die Kleine Stadt"(1909) stehen. Die entscheidende Lebens- und Schaffensphase besteht aus dem Talent Heinrich Manns den Menschen und Schriftsteller in seinem Frühwerk zu formen. Schreiben als Selbstfindungsprozess? Vielmehr scheint es sein Bedürfnis zu sein Zeitgenossen und Kaiserzeit auf satirische und schließlich dann auch politische Weise darzustellen. Was hat ihn zu diesem satirischen und schließlich nach 1910 politischen Schriftsteller gemacht? Wie war sein Weg dorthin? Gründe gab es für den damals knapp dreißigjährigen genug. Die Kaiserzeit und sein allmächtiger Bruder sind nur zwei davon. Vor allem aber das Fin de siècle - Verständnis der Jahrhundertwende machen ihn zu einem Vorbild für die junge Generation von Schriftstellern seiner Zeit. Und dennoch stand er als einer der wenigen der Literaturepoche des Fin de siècle skeptisch gegenüber. Die Veränderung in seinem schriftstellerischen Denken und Schaffen machen den Reiz dieser Romane aus. Gleichzeitig ist sie nicht frei von Widersprüchen. Für die Nachwelt und zum Verständnis von Heinrich Manns Literatur dieser Zeitspanne ist es heute wichtig die Zeitlosigkeit seiner Intention zu sehen. Es besteht eine ungeheure Aktualität zwischen den politischen sowie literarischen Strömungen und denen der gerade erst erlebten Jahrtausendwende. Euphorie und Zerrissenheit einer ganzen Literaturepoche werden schriftstellerisch festgehalten von einem großen und im Gegensatz zu seinem Bruder Thomas fast zu wenig beachteten Autor. About the Author: Alexander von Fenner, geboren 1971 in Düsseldorf, aufgewachsen im westfälischen Münsterland, studierte in Düsseldorf Germanistik und Geschichte an der Heinrich - Heine - Universität. Beruflich wie studentisch treibt ihn die Lust der Erprobung und Horizonterweiterung. Stationen seines Werdeganges sind die Gastronomie, Auslandsaufenthalte und Studienbeginne an der Wilhelmsuniversität Münster und der Ruhruniversität Bochum. 1999 beginnt er sein Studium in Düsseldorf, wo er im Herbst 2006 abschließt.
