Es ist freilich zunächst eine Frage der Definition und des Blickwinkels, was die Mitte Europas denn sei. Geographisch gesehen liegt der Mittelpunkt des Kontinents im litauischen Dorf Purnuskes und somit im historischen Gebiet der polnisch-litauischen Adelsrepublik. Die Frage nach der Lage Polens in Europa war unter einer politischen Perspektive seit jeher von Schwankungen gekennzeichnet. Einmal schien das Land weit im Westen zu liegen, dann wiederum war es im festen Griff des Osten und zeitweise befand sich Polen zwischen zwei Welten. Jedoch zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts wurde Polen in der Mitte des Kontinents fest verankert, zumindest nach dem NATO-Beitritt und der EU-Osterweiterung. Nicht immer konnte dieses Thema so national distanziert betrachtet werden, wie es in unseren heutigen Staatensystemen möglich ist. Im frühen Mittelalter war der polnische Herrschaftsbereich eng mit dem des ostfränkischen Reiches verknüpft. Dies ist ein Aspekt, den ich in dieser Arbeit näher betrachten möchte, speziell die Beziehung zwischen Heinrich II. und Boleslaw I. Chrobry, dem Herzog von Polen. Da ich versucht habe, mich bei dieser Arbeit stark an der Quellenbasis zu orientieren, halte ich es für eine Notwendigkeit, mich zunächst mit den wichtigsten Quellen für diese Zeit in einem Quellenkapitel auseinanderzusetzen. Dem schließt sich eine allgemeine Betrachtung des Jahres 1002 an, um dadurch die Ausgangslage Heinrichs II. für die folgenden Jahre besser nachvollziehen zu können. Darauf folgt die Darlegung der Reichspolitik mit Boleslaw. Letztendlich soll, gemäß des Titels dieses wissenschaftlichen Aufsatzes, versucht werden, Gründe für die aggressive Politik Heinrichs II. gegen Boleslaw zu finden.
