Was haben "Findet Nemo" und "Ratatouille" mit der griechischen Mythologie gemeinsam? Die Trickfilmhelden gehen auf dieselbe Reise wie ihre antiken Vorbilder. Die so genannte Heldenreise ist ein altes Erzählmodell, das auch heute noch von vielen bekannten Regisseuren wie George Lucas verwendet wird, weil sie von dessen Wirkung überzeugt sind. Dieses Buch erläutert die Hintergründe der Heldenreise und erklärt das Modell und dessen Weiterentwicklung. Der Mythenforscher Joseph Campbell hat als erster eine Struktur erkannt, die allen Mythen zu Grunde liegt. Jeder Mythos dreht sich um einen Helden und dieser kann in tausend verschiedenen Gestalten auftreten. Ebenso lassen sich in vielen Geschichten bestimmte Archetypen wieder finden, die nach C.G. Jung typisiert werden können. Christopher Vogler, ehemals Story-Analytiker in der dramaturgischen Abteilung der Walt Disney Company, übersetzte Campbells Modell in den Neunziger Jahren für das Medium Spielfilm. Allerdings bleibt er bei der mythologischen Ausrichtung Campbells. Die neuste und zudem erste deutsche Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema stammt von Joachim Hammann, der sich 2007 mit der Heldenreise im Film beschäftigte. Die einzelnen Stufen der Heldenreise unterstellt er einer filmtypischen Vier-Akt-Struktur. Die Theoretiker werfen in ihren Werken mit unzähligen Filmbeispielen um sich und lassen bislang auf eine vergleichende Analyse warten. In diesem Buch wird dies nachgeholt. Eine ausführliche Analyse der beiden Pixar Filme "Findet Nemo" und "Ratatouille" zeigt, wie die Modelle der Heldenreise dort angewendet werden. Die Abenteuer von Marlin und Remy sind unterschiedlicher, wie sie nicht sein könnten. Dennoch gibt es Gemeinsamkeiten. "Findet Nemo" war ein Kassenschlager, sowohl an der Kinokasse als auch beim anschließenden Merchandising.
