About the Book

"Frau Helma Steinbach geht voran, sie hat die größten Stiebeln an ..." stand 1901 in einem Spottgedicht auf Steinbach im Hamburger Fremdenblatt. Es ging um den SPD-internen Konflikt um den Parteiausschluss von Maurern, denen Streikbruch vorgeworfen wurde. Steinbach ging voran, als es 1892 um den Beschluss des ersten Gewerkschaftskongresses nach dem Sozialistengesetz ging, dass die Gewerkschaften auch die in ihren Branchen beschäftigten Frauen als Mitglieder aufnehmen sollten. Der einstimmig gefasste Beschluss ist als "Resolution Steinbach" in die Gewerkschaftsgeschichte eingegangen. Sie hat eine Gewerkschaft der Plätterinnen gegründet und Streiks organisiert. Sie ging voran, als es um die Gründung der dann sehr erfolgreichen Konsumgenossenschaft "Produktion" ging, dessen Aufsichtsrat sie lange Zeit als einzige Frau angehört hat, wie auch in der Agitation für die Sozialdemokratie auf dem flachen Land in Schleswig-Holstein. Vorne dabei war sie bei der Gründung der Hamburger Freien Volksbühne, um den Arbeitern die fortschrittliche Theaterliteratur nahe zu bringen. Sie hat vielfach selbst Texte rezitiert, manchmal ganze Theaterstücke, wobei sie bis zu tausend Zuhörer hatte.
About the Author: Kerstin Haake hat an der Hamburger Universität Geschichte studiert und wechselte danach in den Journalismus. Auch hier spielen Personen und Persönlichkeiten häufig eine wichtige Rolle, ob in Lokalnachrichten, Wirtschaftsjournalismus und im Nachrichtengeschäft. Helma Steinbach hat den Blick dafür geschärft, dass Frauen oft eine wichtige Rolle spielten und spielen, aber bis heute zu selten dafür gewürdigt werden. Nach dem Studium hat die Autorin bei verschiedenen Medien gearbeitet, u.a. beim NDR, bei der Financial Times Deutschland und bei Zeit Online. Inzwischen ist sie tätig bei der Deutschen Presse-Agentur, zunächst als Nachrichtenchefin, jetzt als Redakteurin bei den Kindernachrichten.
