Mit seinen vielfigurigen, sorgfaltig auf kleinen Kupfer oder Holztafeln gemalten mythologischen und allegorischen Szenen sowie einigen religiosen Themen hatte Hendrick van Balen ein Sammlerpublikum begeistern konnen, das sowohl die bis in das kleinste Detail handwerklich perfekte Ausfuhrung als auch komplexe Bildinhalte und ideenreich gestaltete Themen zu schatzen wuate. Diese Kabinettbilder, die in seinem Oeuvre neben einigen Altargemalden und Glasfensterentwurfen den umfangreichsten und kunstlerisch bedeutendsten Teil einnehmen, pragten und verbreiteten neue ikonographische Gruppen, wie beispielsweise die Gottermahlzeiten. Auf der Basis einer Untersuchung des Gesamtwerkes charakterisiert die Autorin die strukturellen, kunstlerischen und inhaltlichen Leistungen dieses neuen Gemaldetyps anhand einiger ausgewalter Beispiele. Die vorliegende Studie stellt auaerdem das personliche Umfeld und das kunstlerische Profil des Malers Hendrick van Balen vor, der inspiriert durch italienische Meister und wesentlich gepragt durch den in Rom und in Venedig arbeitenden Maler Hans Rottenhammer, in Flandern seine hochst eigenstandige Ausdrucksweise entwickelte. Die Autorin spurt den historischen Voraussetzungen nach, die un 1600 dazu fuhrten, daa sich in Antwerpen neue Bildgattungen entfalten und sich der auf Figuren, insbesondere auf weibliche Akte spezialisierte Van Balen als einer der angesehensten Fachmaler in Antwerpen etablieren konnte. Es werden auaerdem seine Auftraggeber und Kunden beleuchtet und sein in gemalten Zeugnissen zum Ausdruck gebrachtes kunstlerisches Selbstverstandnis untersucht. Der umfangreiche, kritische Katalog bietet eine Zusammenstellung der gesicherten und der abzuschreibenden Werke, ordnet jedes Werk in eine bestimmte Entsehungsphase und klart die Zusammenarbeit mit anderen spezialisierten Malern wie Jan Brueghel d. A., Jan Breughel d. J. oder Josse de Momper.
