About the Book

It is the spring of 1429, and fourteen year old Geneviève in Provence is faced with a terrifying predicament: Someone, by means of a forged letter, has lured her brother Blaise into a deadly trap in the north of war-torn France--and she is determined to save him. Accompanied only by her beloved dog, Noirine, Geneviève sets out on the harrowing journey from Aubagne, close to the Mediterranean Sea, to Poissy, just west of Paris. She has no idea what lies ahead; she only knows that she must overtake Blaise before he is trapped. Geneviève will meet friars, Gypsies, pilgrims, lepers, and even a crazed woman who believes she is a witch. She will meet danger in many forms: storms, a mysterious assailant in the night, wild beasts, and marauding soldiers from the seemingly endless war between France and England. But nothing can deter Geneviève from her quest to reach her brother Blaise before evil befalls him. While Geneviève is on her journey, two of the first ladies of France--Joan of Arc and the writer Christine de Pisan--are on quests of their own, and cross her path. In this race against time, a courageous young woman forges an unforgettable journey against the backdrop of the Hundred Years War.
About the Author: Margot Sims is a retired high school history teacher who has always been drawn to the medieval past, especially that of France and its neighbors. She believes good historical fiction has the power to transport readers to different times and places, deepening their understanding of their past and present. She has tried hard in this book to depict historical events, facts, and persons accurately, and to represent fictitious persons and events authentically. She makes her home in Kansas City, Missouri, but travels extensively whenever she can. She particularly enjoys nosing around old walled towns in France, imagining the lives and times that once filled those fascinating places.
