About the Book

This book deals in depth with the history, current status and possible future of the institution of the boarding house.

The concept of shared housing, particularly boarding houses, has long held a place in the American cultural and social landscape. From the mid-19th century through the early 20th century, boarding houses were a vital part of urban life, providing affordable living arrangements for a variety of people, including laborers, young professionals, immigrants, and the elderly. At their height, these establishments were more than just places to sleep; they offered meals, companionship, and a sense of community that many found essential in fast-growing cities. Yet, by the mid-20th century, boarding houses began to fade from view, replaced by a rising preference for single-family homes, apartments, and the modern nursing home. Today, as we face new challenges around aging, housing affordability, and social isolation, boarding houses-especially for elderly populations-are re-emerging as a potential solution. This book explores their history, current state, and future prospects in America, with comparisons to similar housing models around the world.

Historically, boarding houses were a mainstay of American cities, offering affordable, flexible living arrangements for transient populations. Their decline coincided with suburbanization, the rise of private homeownership, and a cultural shift toward independence and nuclear family living. At the same time, housing for the elderly moved into institutional settings, such as nursing homes and retirement communities, often isolating seniors from the broader community. The loss of the boarding house model removed a valuable option for seniors who needed affordable housing and community but did not require more attentive care.

In recent years, however, new forms of shared living have emerged, driven by demographic shifts, economic pressures, and changing attitudes about aging. The elderly population in America is growing rapidly, and many seniors are seeking alternatives to institutional care. At the same time, a housing crisis has made affordable living options harder to find, especially for those on fixed incomes. Boarding houses-or more modern variants like co-housing, shared housing communities, and "Golden Girls" homes-offer promising solutions. These models blend the affordability and social benefits of shared living with the independence and dignity that many seniors desire.

Around the world, similar trends are emerging. In countries like Denmark, the Netherlands, and Japan, innovative senior co-housing communities have gained popularity, offering elders the chance to age in place while maintaining a strong social support network. In many Asian countries, multigenerational living remains common, providing another point of contrast to the American experience. Understanding these global approaches can offer valuable lessons for rethinking senior housing in the United States.

Looking toward the future, this book asks how the boarding house model might be reinvented for the 21st century. Can it provide a solution to the growing challenges of housing, healthcare, and social isolation among the elderly? What role might technology, policy changes, and shifts in societal attitudes play in this reinvention?

By examining the historical roots of boarding houses, their decline, and their potential resurgence, this book aims to chart a path forward for a new, more inclusive vision of aging and community living in America and beyond.
