Hermes wird in der Ilias und in der Odyssee jeweils zwölfmal genannt. Die Untersuchung dieser 24 Stellen fördert einen uralten Gott zutage, der weit in die Präolympik hineinreicht, sich aber immer mehr zu einem Gott des olympischen Hochkultes entwickelt. Der alte Gott scheint einer der mächtigsten gewesen zu sein, mit der Macht über Leben/Heilen und Schlaf/Tod. Aus dieser frühen Zeit stammt sein zwielichtiges Wesen, das ihn auch im Hochkult charakterisiert, das aber in diesem noch intensiviert wird durch die Tatsache, daß er zwar den olympischen Diener-Boten des Zeus spielen muß, dennoch aber seinen alten Bereich des Todes und Schlafes beibehalten kann. So ergeben die 24 Stellen bei Homer eine Hermes-Biographie, aus der sich sein Weg von der Präolympik in die Olympik ablesen läßt. Darüber hinaus sind zahlreiche Rückschlüsse bezüglich des präolympischen Systems und seiner Kriterien möglich. Aus dramaturgischer Sicht zeigt die Untersuchung, wie die vorangegangenen Bände auch, daß «Homer» ganz bewußt und konsequent seine Worte und Epitheta setzt. Von nichtssagenden erstarrten Floskeln kann keine Rede sein. Die Figur des Hermes wird in Ilias und Odyssee konsequent durchgezeichnet.
About the Author: Der Autor: Harald Zusanek, geboren 1922 in Wien, studierte Medizin, Philosophie, Geschichte und Kunstgeschichte sowie Schauspiel und Regie am Reinhardt-Seminar. Seit 1945 arbeitete er als Regisseur und freier Schriftsteller von Theaterstücken, Filmen und Fernsehspielen und gestaltete insgesamt 17 Dokumentarfilme. Ab 1967 war er als Professor an der Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst, Abteilung Film und Fernsehen, tätig. Er war Verfasser von mehr als 20 Dramen und wurde vielfach für sein Werk ausgezeichnet. Seit Mitte der 50-er Jahre beschäftigte er sich intensiv mit den Epen Homers. Bei seinem Tod 1989 hinterließ er mehr als 10.000 Seiten zur Homer- und Präolympik-Forschung. Aus diesem Nachlaß erschienen bisher drei Bände: Rhodos und Helios 1994, Kalypso 1996 und Die Nymphen 1998.
