Avec le livre VI des Histoires, Hrodote entre dans le coeur de ce que les Grecs appelleront les Guerres Mdiques. Aprs avoir racont la rvolte des cits ioniennes contre le roi Perse et les aventures du tyran de Sardes, Histie, Hrodote entame le rcit des expditions perses vers l'ouest en vue de punir les cits d'Ertrie et d'Athnes, que le roi Darius accusait d'avoir coopr avec les Ioniens dans la rvolte des cits grecques d'Asie Mineure. S'ouvre alors la narration du conflit entre les Grecs d'Europe et les barbares d'Asie. L'historien relate la premire expdition de Mardonios contre la Thrace puis celle du grand roi Darius contre Athnes. Ce rcit culmine avec la bataille de Marathon qui deviendra au cours du cinquime sicle le paradigme de la victoire de l'hoplite athnien et du rgime dmocratique face la tyrannie. La bataille de Marathon permet en effet Hrodote de glorifier le patriotisme athnien ainsi que la valeur militaire de la cit. Hrodote nous renseigne aussi au cours de digressions sur les relations entre Athnes et sa cit rivale Egine ainsi que sur le r"le politique du roi de Sparte Clomne dans les relations entre les cits grecques. La Collection des Universits de France offre au lecteur le texte original d'Hrodote dans l'dition tablie par Ph.-E. Legrand accompagn d'une traduction en franais. Le rcit de l'expdition de Darius est prcd d'une notice prsentant au lecteur la composition du rcit ainsi que les sources historiques d'Hrodote.
