Verrückter Puma, der nicht nur die Bürde des verstorbenen Häuptlings Sechs Hufe zu tragen hat, muss das den Appsalooke gegebene Versprechen erfüllen und mit seinen Kriegern gegen die Siksikáwa ziehen, um diese nach deren Überfall zu "befrieden".
Als er und seine Anhänger wieder heimkehren, warten bereits ihre Verbündeten, die Kiowa in ihrem Lager. Sie benötigen dringend die Hilfe der Appsalooke im Kampf gegen die ersten Sioux-Völker, welche in die Schwarzen Berge eindringen. Es kommt zu einem ersten bedeutungsvollen Zusammenstoß.
Die Häuptlinge der sich gegenüberstehenden Völker wollen jedoch kein unnötiges Blutvergießen und so sollen jeweils nur die zwei besten Krieger der Gruppen gegeneinander antreten. Sechs Hufe, der inzwischen das uneingeschränkte Vertrauen, selbst bei den Kiowa besitzt, tritt für diese an. Auf der Gegenseite geschieht das Undenkbare.
Was alle Sioux bereits wissen, ist den anderen Völkern noch nicht bekannt, dass kein Krieger rücksichtsloser und brutaler gegen einen Feind kämpft, als es Rasender Wirbelwind zu tun pflegt. Anfänglich sorgt es bei den Appsalooke und den Kiowa für große Verwunderung, da eine Kriegerin gegen ihren besten Kämpfer antreten soll.
So stehen sich der frühere Coyote, nun Sechs Hufe und Blue Bird als Rasender Wirbelwind auf Leben und Tod gegenüber. Mitten im Kampf, kurz bevor Sechs Hufe von ihr getötet wird, entdeckt Blue Bird unter dessen Kriegsbemalung eine unverkennbare alte Narbe. Sie erkennt ihren Ehemann, der durch Blue Bird schlagartig seine Erinnerungen zurückerhält.
Sechs Hufe ist verzweifelt und glaubt am Ende seines Weges angekommen zu sein und so muss er eine schwerwiegende Entscheidung treffen.
Blue Bird ist jedoch nicht bereit, ihren Mann noch einmal zu verlieren und plant, Tanzender Kessel, dessen neue Frau zu beseitigen.
Weiter südlich, an der Biegung des Makizita tánka, des Großen Weißen Flusses, am Abzweig zum Cankpé Ópi Wakpála, dem, Verwundetes Knie Bach' treffen die Sioux auf einen neuen Gegner, die Wölfe der Plains, die Skidi. Sie dulden keine neuen Völker in ihrer Nähe, zumal sie sich erinnern, was vor drei Sommern geschah, als diese ihnen nicht nur ihr Jungfrauen-Opfer und alle ihre Ponys raubten, sondern neben anderen auch ihren Priester ermordeten. Die Skidi kennen keinerlei Erbarmen und beginnen, das Volk der dort soeben angekommenen Sioux sogar mit Hilfe eines Präriefeuers auszulöschen.
