Auch wenn die acht Krieger der Sicangu von ihrem Raub- und Rachefeldzug gegen die Skidi erfolgreich mit vielen Mustangs heimkehren konnten, bleiben ihnen ihre nun nach blutiger Rache dürstenden Feinde unerbittlich auf der Spur.
Kurz bevor die Sicangu unter Moskito den rettenden Bärenberg, den Paha Mato im, Mond Der Reifen Felsenbirnen' erreichen, um sich dort unter anderem mit den Völkern der übrigen Sioux zum jährlichen Sonnentanz zu vereinen, kommt es zum Überlebenskampf mit den von allen Völkern so sehr gefürchteten Wolfspawnee. Diese umzingeln das von ihnen um seine vielen Krieger beraubte, fast wehrlose Volk mit einer gewaltigen Übermacht, dass sich selbst die kleineren Jungen ihren Feinden tapfer entgegenstellen.
Währenddessen finden sich am Fuß des Paha Mato noch mehr Völker der Sioux als in den Sommern zuvor als die "Sieben Ratsfeuer", die "Ochéthi Sakówin" zusammen und lassen die Festlichkeiten zum alljährlichen Sonnentanz beginnen.
Steinkopf und Tusweca können beide die Herzen von Medicine Wolfs Töchtern, Kleine Krähe und Herbstwind gewinnen, was aber nicht jedem Krieger gefällt. Vor allem der von Tusweca so sehr zum Narren gehaltene Witapaha, der Kiowa Schwer Zu Treffen, der auch eine der beiden Schwestern heiraten wollte, ist nicht bereit eine weitere ihn demütigende Ablehnung hinzunehmen. An der Seite seiner engsten Freunde schreckt dieser nicht einmal mehr vor einem Mord oder der Entführung von Herbstwind und Sung-Ei Putakas Tochter Weißes Gras zurück. Letztere will er dem Priester der Skidi als Blutopfer für den Morgenstern anbieten, um für die Kiowa neue und starke Freunde gegen die Lakota zu gewinnen.
Der Umstand das Weißes Gras nun eine Lakota ist, macht sie für diesen zu einem sehr willkommenen Opfer.
So ist auch der Frieden in den Schwarzen Bergen zwischen den Sicangu und den Witapaha kaum noch zu bewahren.
