Seminar paper from the year 2017 in the subject Dutch (Literature, Culture and Language), grade: 2,0, University of Münster, language: Dutch, abstract: Het is algemeen bekend, of het lijkt de algemene openbare mening te zijn, dat Duitsers positief ingesteld zijn tegenover de Nederlanders. Uit onderzoek bleek, dat Duitsers zelfs positiever tegenover Nederlanders dan tegenover zichzelf ingesteld zijn (Beelen, 2001). Men zou kunnen denken, dat het altijd zo is geweest: de onvriendelijke, hardwerkende Duitser en de sympathieke, gastvriendelijke Nederlander. Maar als men het Duitse Hollandbeeld in de literatuur bekijkt, lijkt er een door de eeuwen heen wisselend, niet steeds positief beeld te existeren. In de 17e eeuw keken de Duitsers nog vol bewondering op Nederland. Vanaf de tweede helft van de 18e eeuw keken ze echter vol hoogmoed op hen neer. Vooral de taal is een "bevoorrecht mikpunt van spot" (Groenewold, 2001). De meeste auteurs tussen 1790 en 1870 herhalen voortdurend de stereotypen en vooroordelen van de longue dureé en storen zich aan de "zonder meer lelijke Nederlandse taal" (Groenewold, 2001). Het Duits beeld van de Nederlander lijkt toen doorgaans negatief te zijn: langzaam, plomp, stijf, koud, pedant en formeel (Groenewold, 2001). Slechts een handvol auteurs probeert dit negatief beeld te relativeren. Zo schrijft Langbehn dat de "Hollanders de betere Duitsers zijn" en dat "vooroordelen zouden verdwijnen als de Duitsers ... meer tot "Hollandgangers" zouden worden" (Groenewold, 2001). In de literatuur uit de naoorlogse periode is een duidelijk positievere houding, maar tegelijkertijd nog steeds negatief beeld van de Duitsers over de Nederlanders te vinden (Groenewold, 2001). Volgens Groenewold (2001) is er bij de auteurs uit de tijd van de Weimarer Republiek meer kennis over Nederland te vinden dan in de naoorlogse periode.
