About the Book

This is the story of the Pee Dee Indians of the Carolinas from their prehistoric arrival in the Americas to the present. This is a story tied to the Pee Dee River and the land surrounding it. This is a story of a people who for decades were invisible to mainstream Americans, hiding in plain sight. This is a story of adaptation, assimilation, resistance, and resurgence; this is the story of our ancestors.
About the Author: Mr. Chavis is Tribal Historian of the Pee Dee Indian Nation of Upper South Carolina but also traces his heritage to the Tuscarora and Catawba Indian nations. He is a member of the Turtle Clan. His tribal name is "Turtle He Dreams" or "Turtle Dreaming". He was named the 38th Native American Community Scholar by the Smithsonian Institute in 2008. The awards allow individuals to pursue independently designed research projects in association with Smithsonian staff. He serves on the Native Affairs Committee of the South Carolina Minority Affairs Commission. A graduate of Appalachian State University with a degree in History and Military Science, he served as an officer in the Army and the North Carolina National Guard. He completed an Academic Concentration in American Indian Studies at UNC-Pembroke in 2005 and a Master of Arts in Teaching degree at UNC-Pembroke in 2009. He is a doctoral candidate at Walden University with a focus on Educational Technology. Mr. Chavis is an experienced technical trainer with an extensive background in computers and technology. He has previously taught Basic Computer Skills, Engineering, HyperText Markup Language (HTML), Microsoft Office, and Web Site Development. He has 20 years experience as a technical trainer and recently taught at Purnell Swett High School and the Community In Schools (CIS) Academy in Robeson County, N.C. His photographs and articles have been published regularly in magazines and newspapers over the past 30 years.
