Neue Erkenntnisse zu bedeutender gotischer Architektur und Skulptur Das Basler Munster ist einer der bedeutendsten mittelalterlichen Bauten am Oberrhein und in der heutigen Schweiz. Seine Doppelturmfassade mit dem markanten Portalvorbau gehort zu den Wahrzeichen der Stadt. Daruber geht beinahe vergessen, dass das Hauptportal nicht immer die heutige Gestalt besass. Als es 1270/85 errichtet wurde, stand es im Inneren einer grossen Vorhalle, aus der erst der Zutritt in die eigentliche Kirche erfolgte. Und es erstrahlte mit seinen zahlreichen Skulpturen in bunter Farbigkeit. Um 1410/20 - das grosse Erdbeben im Jahre 1356 hatte Schaden verursacht - wurde das Portal an den heutigen Standort versetzt. Eine weitere Zasur in seiner Geschichte stellt der Glaubenswechsel Basels von 1529 dar, mit dem das Portal nochmals eine neue Gestalt erhielt. Elf Autorinnen und Autoren aus Deutschland, Frankreich und der Schweiz stellen im vorliegenden Buch die komplizierte Geschichte des Munster-Hauptportals in vielfaltigen Aspekten dar. Auf sein Bildprogramm wird ebenso eingegangen wie auf die bauliche Entwicklung, die Farbgebung, die kommende Restaurierung, seine Bewertung in der Forschung und das historische Umfeld, in dem es entstand. Auch die mittelalterliche Symbolik und Nutzung des reprasentativsten Munsterzugangs kommen zur Sprache, und es wird gezeigt, welche Einflusse darin aufgegriffen wurden und wie umgekehrt das Portal und seine Skulpturen in anderen Bauten nachwirkten. In diesem Zusammenhang wird auch der von der franzosischen Skulptur beeinflusste Bildhauer des Hauptportals mit dem Notnamen 'Erminoldmeister' und seine weiteren Werke in Konstanz und Regensburg vorgestellt. Eines wird aufgrund dieser Publikation deutlich: Dem Hauptportal des Basler Munsters, das auch im Rahmen der Parler-Architektur zu verstehen ist, kommt uberregionale Bedeutung zu.
