Der Hirse wurde erst in jungerer Zeit, und besonders aufgrund franzosischer Initiative, besonderes Augenmerk zuteil. Sie stellte in langst vergangenen Zeiten eine Hauptfrucht dar. In der bauerlichen Kost spielte sie auch in Europa bis in unser Jahrhundert noch eine gewisse Rolle. In der Gegenwart erfahrt die Hirse im Zusammenhang verschiedener Ruckbesinnungstendenzen Neubewertung und Aufschwung. Dieser Tagungsband enthalt 16 Beitrage aus 8 Landern (darunter auch aussereuropaische Bereiche wie Eurasien, Japan und Indien), die auch weite Zeitraume (von der Fruhgeschichte uber das Mittelalter bis zur Gegenwart) umfassen. Die Darstellungen handeln u.a. von Anbau, Ernte u. Weiterverarbeitung im Zeit- u. Kulturvergleich und verweisen auch auf brauchtumliche und symbolische Bezuge."
About the Author: Die Herausgeberin: Edith Horandner studierte Volkskunde/Europaische Ethnologie, Anglistik und Germanistik in Wien sowie Sozial- und Kulturanthropologie in Boston (Massachusetts). Beginn der wissenschaftlichen Laufbahn an der Universitat Wien. Seit 1986 ist sie Vorstand des Instituts fur Volkskunde/Europaische Ethnologie in Graz. Ethnologische Nahrungsforschung zahlt zu den Hauptinteressen der Herausgeberin, die auch Mitglied der Internationalen Kommission fur Ethnologische Nahrungsforschung ist.
