Ce volume comble une solution de continuite entre plusieurs volumes d'ores et deja parus de la serie Histoire Auguste dans la " Collection des Universites de France " IV 2, Vies des deux Valeriens et des deux Galliens (O. Desbordes-St. Ratti, 2000); V 1, Vies d'Aurelien et de Tacite (F. Paschoud, 1996); V 2, Vies de Probus, Firmus, Saturnin, Proculus et Bonose, Carus, Numerien et Carin (F. Paschoud, 2001). Les Trente Tyrans constituent une biographie sui genris dans l'Histoire Auguste de fait qu'elle regroupe en fait trente-deux (trente hommes et deux femmes), et non pas seulement trente petites biographies, les plus breves ne depassant pas quelques lignes, la plus longue, - celle de la reine Zenobie - comptant plusieurs pages. L'idee dominante de ce petit recueil est que l'abjection de l'empereur Gallien a ete telle qu'elle a suscite partout dans l'Empire l'apparition d'usurpateurs (c'est le sens de tyrannus en latin des la seconde moitie du 4e s.) qui se sont substitues avec des succes divers a un prince indigne et inefficace. Le chiffre " trente " est sans doute calque sur les trente tyrans d'Athenes, un parallele assez malheureux: il n'y a rien de commun entre des usurpateurs apparus aux quatre coins de l'Empire romain dans une periode de plusieurs annees et le groupe dictatorial de trente individus charges des purges a Athenes durant un bref laps a la fin de la guerre du Peloponnese. Le pseudo-auteur, " Trebellius Poollio ", peine du reste a atteindre le nombre de trente-deux et en est reduit a inventer plusieurs personnages, a transformer en usurpateurs des individus qui ne se sont pas empares du pouvoir supreme, et a situer sous Valerien et Gallien des usurpateurs surgis sous d'autres regnes. La Vie de Claude, aussi attribuee a " Trebellius Pollio ", est fort mediocre. Elle escamote une partie des campagnes menees par ce valeureux guerrier et narre avec beaucoup de confusion certaines autres. Il s'agit surtout d'un panegyrique de ce prince, pretendu ancetre de la dynastie constantinienne. Ce motif de propagande apparu en 310 quand Constantin se degage du systeme tetrarchique ne peut pas jouer un role dans un texte dont l'auteur pretend ecrire avant mai 305, ce qui est le cas pour " Pollio ". On tient donc ici la preuve principale du brouillage chronologique qui domine l'ensemble de l'Histoire Auguste. Le dernier tiers du texte est occupe par de faux documents, essentiellement des listes de dotations pretendument attribuees a Claude avant son accession a l'Empire, qui reunissent un grand nombre objets heteroclites, parfois avec des sous-entendus ou egrillards, ou moqueurs envers le christianisme.
