About the Book

Texte le plus enigmatique de l'Antiquite tardive, l'Histoire Auguste constitue la source majeure pour notre connaissance de la periode qui va de 117 (regne d'Hadrien) a 284 (regnes de Carus, Carin et Numerien). Meme si la recherche actuelle s'accorde a en situer la redaction finale dans la derniere decennie du IVe siecle ou dans les premieres annees du Ve, dans les milieux senatoriaux paiens de Rome, de nombreuses zones d'ombre subsistent sur les strates successives de sa redaction, sur la transmission du texte, sur son auteur et sur sa raison d'etre. Au centre du recueil, la Vie d'Alexandre Severe, la plus longue, apparait comme un miroir du prince refletant les ideaux de son auteur. Empereur dote de toutes les vertus d'un bon gouvernant, a l'oppose de son predecesseur Heliogabale, le jeune Alexandre Severe, ne en 210 et empereur de 222 a 235, apparait surtout comme le protecteur de tous les cultes, alors que sa biographie a ete redigee apres que Theodose eut fait du christianisme la religion officielle de l'empire romain en 380, au detriment progressif des cultes traditionnels. Ce n'est pas comme le temoignage de la vie d'un empereur du IIIe siecle qu'il convient de lire cette biographie, mais comme la projection sur un empereur du passe des voeux d'un groupe social, l'aristocratie restee fidele aux anciens cultes et aux valeurs romaines, exigeant du bon prince qu'il fasse regner la paix par sa politique interieure tout en poursuivant la politique de conquete de Rome, menant une vie privee au-dessus de tout reproche et pratiquant le syncretisme qui fut toujours cher a la republique et a l'empire romains.

Cecile Bertrand-Dagenbach, professeur de langue et litterature latines a l'Universite de Lorraine, docteur en Philosophie et Lettres de l'Universite de Liege, ancienne boursiere de la fondation Alexandre von Humboldt au Seminaire d'Histoire ancienne de l'Universite de Heidelberg, a consacre une grande partie de ses travaux a l'Histoire Auguste, parmi lesquels on peut citer une monographie Alexandre Severe et l'Histoire Auguste , parue dans la collection Latomus a Bruxelles en 1990.

Agnes Molinier-Arbo, ancienne eleve de l'ENS, docteur en langue et litterature latines de l'Universite Paris IV, maitre de conferences a l'Universite de Strasbourg, habilitee a diriger des recherches, a publie de nombreux travaux sur l'Histoire Auguste, parmi lesquels il faut citer son ouvrage La Vie de Commode dans l'Histoire Auguste (Nancy, 2012).
