About the Book

Napoléon III, le premier président de la République française (1852-1870), n'a jamais caché sa fascination pour l'archéologie antique. Il reprit à son compte toutes les vieilles lunes de la France et de ses dynasties: son mythe fondateur, désormais fixé à la rencontre tragique, mais glorieuse, entre Vercingétorix et Jules César; le rêve impérial, remontant à Charlemagne; le rêve italien, remontant au XVe siècle et aux guerres d'Italie. Napoléon III avait en outre une passion pour l'archéologie, science nouvelle qui permettait de matérialiser le passé et, plus prosaïquement, de vérifier l'exactitude des sources littéraires. Aussi se lança-t-il, à partir de 1861, dans un programme de fouilles sans précédent: Alésia, Gergovie, le Palatin à Rome, pour ne citer que les plus emblématiques. En achetant en 1861 les jardins Farnèse au roi de Naples, François II, Napoléon III mit le pied sur le Palatin, palais des Césars, comme on l'appelait alors, établissant un lien direct entre sa personne et les empereurs romains. En 1861, il visite le site d'Alise-Sainte-Reine identifié comme Alésia. Il se rend ensuite à Gergovie et à Bibracte en 1862. Le 8 mars de la même année, il crée le Musée des Antiquités celtiques et gallo-romaines (actuellement le Musée d'Archéologie nationale) par décret, auquel il fait don de sa collection. Son inauguration se déroule le 12 mai 1867 en présence de l'Empereur. Les salles sont ouvertes trois jours par semaine et présentent le produit des fouilles qu'il a ordonnées. On peut également y admirer des moulages et des maquettes relatives à la guerre des Gaules ainsi que la donation de Jacques Boucher de Perthes et les collections offertes par le roi Frédéric VII de Danemark. Il finance à hauteur de plus de 8 millions de francs des recherches archéologiques, des études expérimentales et des travaux cartographiques. En 1865, il fait ériger une statue de Vercingétorix au mont Auxois dont le piédestal porte l'inscription suivante: "La Gaule uni
