S'il est difficile de définir le mot Prostitution, combien est-il plus difficile de caractériser ce qui est son histoire dans les temps anciens et modernes! Les graves auteurs du Dictionnaire de l'Académie (dernière édition de 1835) n'ont pas trouvé pour ce mot-là une meilleure définition que celle-ci: Abandonnement à l'impudicité. Avant eux, Richelet s'était contenté d'une définition plus vague encore: Déréglement de vie; mais peu satisfait lui-même de cette explication, dont l'insuffisance accuse la modestie, il en avait complété le sens par une phrase moins amphibologique: C'est un abandonnement illégitime que fait une fille ou femme de son corps à une personne, afin que cette personne prenne avec elle des plaisirs défendus. Cette phrase, dans laquelle les auteurs du Dictionnaire de l'Académie ont puisé leur définition, ne dit pas même tout ce que renferme le mot Prostitution, puisque l'abandonnement dont il s'agit s'est étendu, en certaines circonstances, aux personnes des deux sexes, et que les plaisirs défendus par la religion ou la morale sont souvent autorisés ou tolérés par la loi. Ce trafic sensuel, que la morale réprouve, a existé dans tous les siècles et chez tous les peuples; mais il a revêtu les formes les plus variées et les plus étranges, il s'est modifié selon les moeurs et les idées; il a obtenu ordinairement la protection du législateur; il est entré dans les codes politiques et même parfois dans les cérémonies religieuses; il a presque toujours et presque partout conquis son droit de cité, pour ainsi dire, et il est encore, de nos jours, sous l'empire du perfectionnement philosophique des sociétés, il est l'auxiliaire obligé de la police des villes, il est le gardien immoral de la moralité publique, il est le triste et indispensable tributaire des passions brutales de l'homme.
