L'Italie est un pays d'Europe où les gens vivent depuis au moins 850 000 ans. La péninsule italienne était habitée depuis l'Antiquité classique par les anciens Étrusques, plusieurs peuples italiques (dont les Latins, les Samnites et l'Ombrie), les Celtes, les colons de la Magna Grecia et d'autres peuples anciens. L'Italie a été le berceau et la plaque tournante de la civilisation romaine antique. Rome a été établie en tant que république en 509 avant JC, après avoir été un royaume en 753 avant JC. Après avoir unifié l'Italie pour former une confédération des peuples italiques, la République romaine a régné sur l'Afrique du Nord, le Proche-Orient et l'Europe occidentale. Après l'assassinat de Jules César, l'Empire romain a régné sur l'Europe occidentale et la Méditerranée pendant des siècles, influençant l'avancement de la philosophie, de la science, de l'art et de la culture occidentales. L'Italie a été divisée en plusieurs cités-États et régimes politiques régionaux après la chute de Rome en 476 après JC. Cette division a persisté jusqu'à l'unification totale du pays en 1871. Les républiques maritimes, en particulier Gênes et Venise, ont prospéré. Alors que l'Italie du Sud restait essentiellement féodale en raison d'une série de monarques byzantins, arabes, normands, espagnols et bourbons, l'Italie centrale continuait d'être gouvernée par les États pontificaux. Avec le début de l'ère moderne, la Renaissance italienne a redonné vie à l'humanisme, à la science, à l'aventure et à l'art et s'est étendue au reste de l'Europe. Il y a eu quatre vagues de migration indoeuropéenne vers l'Italie au cours de l'âge du cuivre. Vers le milieu du troisième millénaire avant JC, un groupe de personnes qui ont apporté la chaudronnerie a subi la première migration indoeuropéenne. La vallée du Pô a été envahie par la civilisation Remedello. La deuxième vague de l'âge du bronze a eu lieu dans la plaine de Padan, en Toscane et le long des côtes de la Sardaigne et de la Sicile. Ces tribus étaient associées à la civilisation Beaker et utilisaient des techniques de forge du bronze. L'âge du bronze s'étend de la fin du troisième millénaire au début du deuxième millénaire avant notre ère. Une troisième vague, liée aux cultures Terramare et Apenninienne, émerge au milieu du deuxième millénaire avant JC.
