L'Histoire des peuples du Nord, publiee a Rome en 1555 par Olaus Magnus, dernier archeveque catholique d'Uppsala, a joui d'une grande notoriete et connu une large diffusion aux XVIe et XVIIe siecles. Pendant cette periode, elle a tout simplement constitue la base principale des connaissances sur l'Europe du Nord, et contribue magistralement a sortir de l'ombre ce qui restait encore une terra incognita. Cette description des contrees et des populations scandinaves, dont nous livrons ici une anthologie des chapitres les plus representatifs, connut un succes eclatant.La presente traduction, inedite en francais, s'efforce de conserver l'aspect le plus novateur de l'oeuvre, c'est-a-dire la fraicheur des observations directes fournies au fil des pages. Olaus Magnus nous livre en effet le temoignage remarquable d'un autochtone qui connaissait de visu ce qu'il rapportait. Aussi beaucoup d'informations sont-elles de premiere main, qu'il s'agisse d'evenements contemporains (comme le Bain de sang de Stockholm), de la description de la nature suedoise, de la peche sur les cotes de Norvege, ou encore des coutumes des Sames ou des Baltes. L'auteur porte un veritable regard d'ethnographe, sans a priori, sur les moeurs des populations qu'il decrit et introduit deja le theme du Bon Sauvage.Le resultat est une somme geographique inegalee en son temps sur la Scandinavie, fruit d'une erudition immense, illustree pedagogiquement par de nombreuses gravures naives et pittoresques. Au milieu du XVIe siecle, l'Histoire d'Olaus Magnus a ouvert un nouveau territoire a la reverie et a l'imaginaire europeen: le Nord.
