About the Book

In today's world, the word stress refers to physical, mental or emotional factor which results in physical or psychological tension. Stress can result from some external factors (environmental, psychological or social situations) or internal situations i.e., illness or from a therapeutic procedure (Medicine Net.com Jan 2, 2016). The word stress was coined by Hans Selye in 1936, who defined it as the demand for change in the body in the form of non-specific response. In his experiments, the animals subjected to physical and emotional stimuli showed the pathologic changes of gastric ulcers, atrophy of lymphoid tissue, adrenal hypertrophy and proved that persistent stress in these animals resulted in several diseases similar to the one which is seen in human beings (American institute of stress).Stress is defined as a response of an organism to environmental difficulties or burdens. Now a days, the term stressor has been used for, the stimulus that incites a stress reaction or state of mind resulting from situations or experiences that are challenging emotionally and physiologically or the body's way of reacting to any type of conditions. Both good and bad experiences cause stress. The experiences that are of short duration and that a person can manage (overcome) and which leaves a sense of happiness is referred to as Good stress whereas, the experiences which are of longer duration, repeated, annoying, psychologically draining, physically challenging or risky and not manageable is referred to as bad stress or being stressed out (McEwen 2007.
