Italia es un país de Europa donde la gente ha vivido durante al menos 850.000 años. La península italiana estuvo habitada desde la antigüedad clásica por antiguos etruscos, varios pueblos itálicos (incluidos los latinos, samnitas y umbri), celtas, colonos de la Magna Grecia y otros pueblos antiguos. Italia sirvió como cuna y centro de la antigua civilización romana. Roma se estableció como república en el año 509 a.C., habiendo sido reino por primera vez en el año 753 a.C. Con el inicio de la edad moderna, el Renacimiento italiano devolvió la vida al humanismo, la ciencia, la aventura y el arte y se expandió al resto de Europa. Hubo cuatro oleadas de migración indoeuropea a Italia durante la Edad del Cobre. Hacia mediados del tercer milenio antes de Cristo, un grupo de personas que trajeron la artesanía del cobre realizaron la primera migración indoeuropea. El valle del Po fue invadido por la civilización Remedello. La segunda ola de la Edad del Bronce tuvo lugar en la llanura de Padan, Toscana y a lo largo de las costas de Cerdeña y Sicilia. Estas tribus estaban asociadas con la civilización Beaker y utilizaban técnicas de forja de bronce. La Edad del Bronce duró desde finales del tercer milenio hasta principios del segundo milenio antes de Cristo. Una tercera ola, vinculada a las culturas Terramare y Apenina, surgió a mediados del segundo milenio antes de Cristo.
